The gateway between the East and the West, Dubai is home to one of the fastest growing cargo hubs in the world.

 

Dubai International recorded 213,748 tonnes of cargo in March, an increase of 14.7 per cent compared to 186,417 tonnes in March 2012. The year to date cargo traffic grew by 13 per cent reaching 584,847 tonnes compared to 517,440 tonnes during the corresponding period in 2012.

 

Total freight volumes for 2012 reached 2,279,624 tonnes, an increase of 3.9 per cent from 2,194,264 tonnes recorded in 2011.

 

According to Airport Council International’s (ACI) latest figures the Dubai International ranks third worldwide in terms of international freight traffic.

  • The 35,000sqm Dubai Airports’ cargo facility was built at a cost of US$75 million (about Dhs275.5 million) in 1991

 

  • In 1991, the its capacity was 150,000 tonnes

 

  • The 1.2 million tonne capacity Cargo Mega Terminal was built at a cost of more than US$ 200 million

 

  • The opening of the Cargo Mega Terminal in 2008 increased the capacity to 2.5 million tonnes

 

  • The efficiently managed facility enables a turnaround of 90 minutes and rapid transfer time of as little as six hours for full container load movement between the quayside at Port Rashid or Jebel Ali and the apron at the airport

 

  • Dubai Airports is serviced by over 140 airlines flying to more than 260 destinations across six continents

 

  • More than 35 cargo airlines have offices at the Dubai International

 

  • There are over 17 air cargo parking slots for freighters

 

  • The cargo warehouse has a total of 56 truck docks for import, export and perishable cargo, and seven docks dedicated to sea-air traffic.

 

  • Storage facility includes small warehouse pallets with 902 positions, regular 1,698 positions, large 1,126 positions and mini shipments 760 (single positions), as well as 18 positions for storing perishables.

 

  • Dubai Airports became the Middle East’s first cargo handling facility to be awarded an ISO 9002 certificate by Lloyd's Register of Quality Assurance in October 1998.

 

  • Won over 30 awards since 1991, including Aircargo News UK’s Best Airport (Cargo) in the Middle East, and the Asian Freight and Supply Chain Awards (AFSCA) Best Airport (ME) for 15 consecutive years.
