Expansion Projects
Dubai Airports has invested USD 7.2 billion in the Dubai International expansion project. A major portion of the project – Terminal 3 and the second concourse was opened in October 2008 increasing the airport’s annual overall capacity to 60 million passengers. Work is in progress to build Concourse 3, the world's first airside facility dedicated to the Airbus superjumbo A380. Concourse 3 is due for completion at the end of 2011, and will boost total annual capacity of Dubai International to 75 million passengers.
Another USD 10 billion has been allocated for the construction of Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International. Dubai World Centre is a multiphase development of six clustered zones: Dubai Logistics City (DLC), Commercial City, Residential City, Aviation City and Golf City, with the world’s largest airport – Dubai World Central-Al Maktoum International (DWC-AMI) at its heart.
The first phase of the project includes a single A380 compatible runway; a passenger terminal with capacity of up to 7 million passengers per annum; a cargo terminal building with a capacity of up to 600,000 tonnes per annum and a 92-metre air traffic control tower. The US$ 820 million first phase is due to open in June 2010.
Several passenger and cargo terminals and four more A380 compatible runways will be constructed as part of the later phases of the project. Upon completion Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International will be the largest airport in the world with capacity for 160 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo per annum.
