15 years of Dubai Cargo Village 2007 Print  Forward to a Friend

History
Looking back, it is hard to believe that from a simple creek-side trading post, Dubai has become a sophisticated international city in a remarkably short time. The success of this crowning glory, as an international City is largely attributed to the concerted efforts of the Dubai Government, the ruling family's foresight - the vision for Dubai to be recognised as the Middle East's trade and commercial capital and its apt geographical location, serving as a gateway to the East and West.

Dubai has been a trading town for almost 200 years. While the discovery of oil in the sixties has been crucial to Dubai's development, however, trade still remains the heart of Dubai's business life, just as it has been for generations. Currently, the non-oil sector contributes more than 90 per cent to the economy.

Dubai's natural creek attracted traders from all over the world. This tradition still continues due to its location, mid-way among Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Dubai has achieved an outstanding position as one of the world's most important re-export hubs with the SEA-AIR cargo centre in a very short span of time.

Keeping abreast with the challenges of Dubai’s pulsating economic boom, Dubai Cargo Village continues to evolve and develop to meet the ever-changing market needs and respond to new tasks.

The Beginning
The 300,000-square-metre Dubai Cargo Village was built at a cost of $75 million (about Dh275.5 million) in 1991 as a response to the growth in air and sea freight and to facilitate transshipment operations between the Indian sub-continent, South East Asia, the Far East and Europe. The phenomenal growth of Dubai, the determined expansion of the Emirates Airline and the increased popularity of air cargo transportation has produced remarkable results at Dubai Cargo Village.

The central position of the UAE on the world map is a vital factor in the phenomenal success of the Dubai Cargo Village, as it has become an important fulcrum for the movement of cargo in the region. Due to its consistent performance with a positive, steady growth, its world-class facilities and effective administration, it is no surprise that DCV has earned the title of the Best Cargo Hub in the region.

Today the Dubai Cargo Village has reached an important milestone as it celebrates its fifteen years of dedicated service to the international business community. Keeping abreast with the challenges of Dubai’s pulsating economic boom, Dubai Cargo Village (DCV) continues to evolve and develop to meet the ever-changing market needs and respond to new tasks.

The Growth
The Dubai Cargo Village is centrally located and is very well connected. Situated adjacent to Dubai International Airport, Dubai Cargo Village provides easy access to the airport that operates flights to 140 destinations worldwide on more than 100 airlines. When Dubai Cargo Village began 15 years ago, in 1991, it was designed to handle 150,000 tonnes of cargo. But within a few years, the facility became too small for the rapidly increasing cargo demand. Today with 112 airlines coming into the Dubai Airport, the future of Dubai Cargo Village looks very bright.

The Dubai Cargo Village forms a gateway between the East and the West to a market of more than 1.5 billion consumers and is a purpose-built complex that has an annual freight handling capacity of 750,000 tonnes. Last year the Dubai Cargo Village handled 1.3 million tonnes of cargo, with the steady growth of 15 per cent per annum. This is expected to go up even further after the inauguration of the brand new Mega Cargo Terminal.
